Recent Employment History

  • Associate Director, Office of Science Teaching Activities, Florida State University (June 2013 – December 2022)
    • Direct the Masters in Science Teaching degree program for students pursuing a career in teaching Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, at either the secondary or college level. Serve as academic advisor and internship supervisor for both College Science Teaching and Science Teaching tracks. Instruct program-specific courses and supervise field placements, establishing and maintaining partnerships with local middle schools, high schools, and Tallahassee Community College for the purpose of providing immersive teaching internships for all students. Document program effectiveness, continuous improvement, and quality enhancement for ongoing accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), and the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE). Develop recruitment and retention strategies.
    • Serve as Lead Co-Directed of the Young Scholars Program, an annual six-week residential summer science and mathematics camp for 40 exceptional rising seniors enrolled in high school in the state of Florida. Coordinate the efforts of two colleagues/Co-Directors, directly supervise counselors and other program staff, oversee academic courses and extracurricular activities, recruit faculty members to sponsor students in their research labs, handle public relations and event scheduling, including an annual research symposium and awards banquet, and manage contracts.
  • Program Director, Science on the Move, Office of Science Teaching Activities, Florida State University (October 2010 – October 2013)
    • Directed the Science on the Move outreach van program for K-12 students and teachers, developing and implementing research-based physical science curricula in K-12 classrooms, planning and leading teacher in-service workshops, handling administration and scheduling for classroom visits and equipment loans, serving as webmaster, maintaining and acquiring inventory, supervising staff, and ultimately impacting the lives of over 6,000 students and 100 teachers annually in a nine county service area surrounding Tallahassee, FL.
    • Co-Directed the Young Scholars Program with two colleagues, reviewing student applications for admission, preparing summative evaluations of students for college applications, and overseeing the development of day-to-day program policy.

Teaching Experience: Courses Taught

  • ISC 5098, Reflective Science Teaching (2), Florida State University. Graduate course that provides students a forum for discussion of contemporary science teaching issues and concerns associated with the co-requisite full-time internship.
  • ISC 5525, Accomplished Practices in Science Teaching (2), Florida State University. Graduate course designed to follow the pedagogical core coursework of the Masters in Science Teaching program, preparing students for the subsequent half-time internship by encouraging reflection and goal-setting.
  • ISC 5525, Advanced Portfolio Design (1), Florida State University. Graduate course designed to teach students how to construct teaching portfolios in Chalk and Wire.
  • ISC 5944, Ethics, School Law, and Management of Science Classrooms (3), Florida State University. Graduate course in which students learn about backward design and use it to create and implement a short unit taught in the concurrent half-time internship, gaining experience in self-reflection through preparing a formal Teacher Work Sample written report.
  • ISC 5945, Full-Time Teaching Internship (6), Florida State University. Graduate course in which students complete at least thirteen weeks of student teaching in the classroom.
  • ISC 5946, Half-Time Teaching Internship (3), Florida State University. Graduate course in which students observe the management, teaching, and assessment strategies of a supervising teacher and complete a teaching unit of at least one week in the classroom.
  • BSC 5936, Special Topics: Inquiry in the Classroom (2), Florida State University. First trial of a new graduate course designed to be coupled with a Directed Independent Study in a science content area (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics), with a focus on Nature of Science and strategies for translating research experience to the classroom.
